Hey People,

Below is a link to a (paint) diagram of a proposed fan layout for a new system I am building. The build is primarily for gaming and I do intend to OC.

http://oi44.tinypic.com/2ynq7ma.jpg

1. Does this all make sense? Why/Why not?
2. Can it be improved?
3. Am i going overboard?

System specs would be as follows:

Case: Fractal Designs Arc Midi R2
PSU: Seasonic X-660
CPU: i5-3570K (im looking to overclock)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
Case Cooling: 2x FD Silent Series R2 140mm, 4x Noctua NF-A14 FLX 140mm
Mobo: ASRock Z77-Extreme4
RAM: GSkill Sniper 1600mhz 8gb
GPU: eVGA GTX770 SC w/ ACX Cooling
SSD: Samsung Pro 128gb
HDD: WD Black Cav 500gb
DVD: Asus DRW-24D3ST

Thanks for reading!

Solution
Your fan layout is perfect for that case. You may not even need the bottom fan(I find they collect lots of dust under the case like that).

If you have room, some users place the cpu cooler blowing UP as heat rises, but it is NOT a requirement and more of a preference.

I think you got me in an edit. I notices that after.

You may also wish to look for a fan grille for the floor fan just to keep anything from falling into it.

One last thin. I have noticed that on my Fractal Define R2, some fans sounded much louder on the floor due to the vent setup(I could never use my silverstone air penetrator fan without too much noise even with the fan being semi quiet in all other spots on the case.).

Great! Ill be placing the case on top of a desk (not floor/carpet) so hopefully dust wont be too much of an issue - Ill keep an eye on it however and remove the bottom fan if need be.

I intended to mount the NH-D14 horizontally, but I'll definitely explore these forums to gain peoples opinions on vertically mounting it. The double top exhaust as featured in the diagram is due to the presence of 2 top mounted case fans currently.

Ahh i see, i see. Well, i guess that leads me to one or two last questions...

If i remove that bottom fan, I'll have 2 intake fans on the front and 3 exhaust fans (2 on top, 1 on back). That's going to result in a negative pressure airflow, correct? What are the / Are there any repercussions of such a design?

Sorry, I have another question to add (it's not worth another thread though). Is it worth cutting away any of the Arc Midi R2's cheese graters? The front fan mounts are open, but the top fan mounts are covered.

If you have the 3 fans out and 2 in, You will have "negative pressure", but because the case has other vents, it will pull air from those. I have in the past blocked extra vents(tape) to force air to come into only the vents I want. To be honest, it never made any noticeable difference and I think i just do it out of habit now.

As far as cutting parts of the top fan grilles go, It would be personal preference. Some users can not stand any extra restriction. The top cover it self will put up more restriction compared to the parts you are looking at cutting. I think they should be ok, but I do not have that case to test with.
