Really Really Slow Computer

A few years ago I got a free Compaq Presario, now the computer was slow to begin with so I put a faster hard drive in it and upgraded the RAM not there is not a full GB of ram in it but I just really want it for an internet machine, now with the new hard drive I reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP3 but now after loading Avast virus protection on it and Safari it runs terrible. Now I have activated the version of windows so its Legit, I have installed all the updates. Once the computer starts it is really slow and close to unusable, now I had Windows Task Manager open for a while and for at least 10 Minutes the CPU Usage was stable at 100% even at idle, now I did a lot of research and people were saying spyware, but all the software I downloaded was from a clean flash drive that is constantly checked for virus. Any comments or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much- Patrick

Upgrade RAM to 2 gig at least to get usable performance, especially if you have a slower CPU. With under 1gig of RAM XP will be slow if you install anything past the core OS.

Make sure your drivers are all installed.

You did not say what this other software you installed was, but make sure you are not running lots of background programs that constantly check for stuf, turn off search indexing on the drive.

uinstall the avast. With a old PC that old and little RAM, todays virus scanners use too many resources and don't run well on. Also Sarari is terribly written for the PC, it's a Mac program that Apple throws a little work to now and again to shut up Windows users who want a Mac browser, but Chrome is better.
