Havin a Fan cable problem

Hi!

So I got my new rig put together but I have this problem with fans.
I have a cable from PSU that can support 4 fans on the fly with molex connectors. Now it also has a 5th connector which is exactly the right size to insert into CHA FAN1 port.

I was hoping that If I would put it in there, the mobo would control the fan speeds and not let them run at 100% all the time.

But is that connector really ment for that? When I first tried to boot up it didn't start when I had that 5th one connected into mobo. But maybe something else was wrong but later it started up without it being connected.

So can it work?


Edit: the CHA FAN1 port is not a molex port so I can only insert thoes very tiny 4 or so pin connectors.

I believe you were trying to plug in the FDD power cable to the MB fan header. The 4 pin female connector on the same daisy chain as the Molex is for powering floppy drives. The 3 or 4 pin fan headers on the MB are already powered; for fans (+12V). They have 1 pin for ground, 1 pin for +12V, and 1 pin for tach feedback.

Molex connectors are simply the standard power plugs for most devices that require high current. If your fans have 3 pin female connectors on them, just plug them into the MB fan headers. You can control the speed in BIOS on most boards. Or let the BIOS control speed automatically.

If the board still allows you to boot to BIOS and to boot Windows, and the fan headers still operate at all, chances are you dodged the bullet. Modern boards have become pretty good at being idiot proof (no offense intended), so it probably simply shut down at the first sign of trouble.

Btw, how did you manage to get the FDD power connector plugged into the fan header? They are keyed differently. And slightly different pin spacing.

Allrdight :) And to answer to your question, it was no trouble, it somehow fit in perfectly.. That was pretty much the reason why I even got the idea that it might actually be the right cable to place in there heh...
