Radeon HD 5850 Artifact fix?

I can get a msi 5850 for about $40 off a craigslist ad. The ad says that it works fine in a crossfire setup, and good with just the auto install windows drivers, but once CCC is installed he says artifacts show up. Is there any fix for this? or is it more of a dying gpu and not worth getting? Saw underclocking or overvolting will make it last longer but if dying then why extend it lol.

Any help is appriciated, I do have a 5850 already that could crossfire with but would most likely be put in another pc.

This is memory error symptom..
And how to fix it? well, you have to replace the bga memory, and that's very difficult, except you have bga rework machine..

Just try your luck..
Bake that graphics card..
If you're lucky enough, you'll see a clean display and artifact free for 1-2 months before that's artifact happens again..
And if it happens, just bake it with more heat..

I've already bake my XFX 4850 5th times this year (well, almost once a month :D ), and still working..
i won't let my old graphics card die easily..

Worth it..?
Actually not.. :)
except you're a gambler..:D

well what would guess baking the card has a success rate of? Obviously having to redo it over and over, but i took a risk and spending $50 on a bricked 5850 toxic earlier in the year lol so this might be worth it lol

Edit: What would cause artifact free without drivers? also why would it work fine in a crossfire setup?

well, there are many possibilities will cause that error..
1. Dirt and dust in the sidelines of your component, makes shortage, so you have to wash it.
2. high electro current from the psu when switch-on for the first time. It makes memory fail, not physically, but just error state of the gate. that's why you see artifact that caused abnormal state of memory gate.
well, with water, you can reset it to normal position.
When you run it with driver installed, the memory run at full speed. without driver, memory running at the slowest state.

Succes rate of baking for this symptom..?
Well, at the old G80/G92 (8800GTX, 9800GTX, GTS250, 9600GT, 8800GT) nvidia gpu, baking technique have very high success rate .

But at complex highend 5850 class, well, i don't know.
That's why i said this is not worth to try, except you're gambler..:D

And actually for $40 error card, that's (very) expensive..
Unless if you can take it for $10-$15, then this is worth to try...:D

Well, it's depend on PSU design..
AcBell and solytech based PSU usually have this minor fault.
Some times, we pull off psu cable from the wall socket. that's make psu's main capacitor empty.
And when power button switch on (in the psu's backside), it's make a shortage to in order to fill the main caps.
This is what we call with "inrush current". and inrush current is very big.

Sometimes bad design psu can't neutralize this wild current, and hit the components.

So, this thing make components error, including the graphics card.

Water?
Before baking process, you should wash your graphics card..with water, toothbrush and soap..

How would it work in crossfire..?
Well, if you cannot install the driver, you cant make customization to make it run in CF mode, right..? :S
But if this baking technique success, this card will run flawlessly..

Actually this problem is not with the older AMD cards it is the new catalyst drivers. all older ATI cards have artifacts with the new drivers. If you want a future proof card never buy AMD, They will mess you over, trying to trick you into thinking you need a new card. I would still be using my 5850 if it wasn't for this. I could have stayed with it , but I wanted to upgrade to windows 8.1
It is a shame too, Because I paid over $300 for this card new. And the 5850 is still a powerful card by today's standards, It is almost equal with the 7790 in performance. (AMD knows this that's why they set the new drivers to make it artifact)

So I bought a Nvidia card to replace it. Nvidia won't trick you into thinking you have a bad card later like AMD does.

As a matter of fact, I can post some game recordings using fraps with my ATI 5850 with the older drivers and then with the new drivers. And post them on youtube. Maybe I can find some other AMD card users with the 5000 series, And ask them to do it too, And expose AMD for who they are.
