Hi, I am custom building a computer and have started buying some parts. I have been using ubuntu on my ancient desktop and so far have really liked it, but is it a replacement for windows? On my computer i plan on doing a lot of development (I plan on becoming a software engineer). I will also play the occasional pc game like battlefield and other fps. The main linux distro I plan on using is ubuntu. I'v read about some software called WINE that will allow me to use windows software when needed(how well does this work for games? Is there a better alternative to WINE?). I'm wondering if it's worth it to spend 100$ on windows 8 or buy some better hardware for my needs. So what do you think i should do?

I have messed around with WINE and gaming on Linux. While the games never really felt slow (on a $2000 computer), they just felt 'off.' I guess I can't really describe it. Games that have been ported (well) ran great, but, then again, I would be worried if Half Life 2 ran poorly.

I probably should note that I was trying to run Skyrim, with mods, and that Dark Souls wasn't the best PC port to begin with and what I was trying to do wasn't helping. Linux just has to be one of those things you have to be patient and competent (I code like crap) to get the most out of it. I actually use it more as a diagnostic tool and for file recovery than anything else, which gives the gaudy hot-swap bays I have a reason to exist.

Why not have both? Just partition up your drive and setup GRUB however you want it to boot. Also, WINE, however great it may be, is not the ideal solution for gaming. It would require a beefy system to run a modern game through WINE. As a point of reference, I setup my mom's laptop with Ubuntu after its Windows install became corrupt. For her to watch Netflix (coded in Silverlight), I had to use WINE. It lags hardcore, and, no, it's not the internet connection.

In the ideal world i would use both but for 100$ out of my build budget for windows 8 i'm a bit iffy if it's worth it. knowing that WINE isn't that good for gaming helps me out with the decision a lot, thanks! I heard that linux is getting better gaming support so maybe i'll live without windows 8 and wait until linux is completely recognized/supported by the gaming industry.

Silverlight performance on Linux sucks...but that really doesn't imply that game performance is bad using Wine.

The ideal solution is to use Steam on Linux, There are more games being ported to Linux/Steam all of the time. And the more people that start to use it the better for everyone.
