Im playing on a 1024x768 screen now ( built the PC recently ), Ive got a GTX 660 OC edition, and I want to upgrade to a 1080p screen but Im too worried of the drop in FPS, how much of a drop should I be expecting when switching to 1080p, would a 720p be a better choice ?

More about : switching 1024x768 1080p drop fps

Your frame rates will drop a little. The 660 is powerful enough where you will still get good frames per second on a 1080p monitor. I think it's worth the upgrade.

Largely depends on the purpose of the pc. For light gaming on medium settings (maybe low) and watching videos you're fine. If you're playing games like bf3 and fc3 though, I'd suggest picking up another 660 and running SLI to get the best performance on your new monitor.

On ultimate 1080p settings, the 660 scored 27 fps on average. http://kotaku.com/5990848/tomb-raider-performance-test-...

If you want to drop down to ultra, the gameplay would be pretty smooth.

Yah, you won't be able to max out games like fc3 on a 1080p monitor with that gpu. You'll be getting high 20's in terms of fps. It'll still be playable, but not ideal.

what about a 720p ? is it that different form a 1080p ?

720p is a lower resolution, which means the picture quality won't be as good. On a 720p monitor, you'd probably score mid 30's, maybe high 30's if you're lucky. My recommendation is to get a 1080p monitor and live with the lower fps for a while, or drop down your graphics settings. Then get another 660 and run sli. It's always best to save up some cash and get the hardware you really want then settle for cheaper hardware that you'll want to be rid of as soon as you have it.

I'm running a single 7950 boost which is more powerful than a 660 and I don't run tomb raider on ultimate because I like to get well above 60fps. I didn't notice much of a difference in texture when putting the settings on high. You can't expect to max everything out with a 660, it's just not that powerful.

A high is very acceptable, a medium or a low is what Im trying avoid .. If can know for sure tat I can run games on high on 50+ avg on 1080p .. that would be great

This benchmark shows the 660 running tomb raider on high settings with 1920x1200 slightly higher than 1080p, and the minimum is 52 fps, the average is 61fps, so yes you will be happy with a 1080p monitor.
