A few months back I used the on-board RAID controller on my P9X79 motherboard to setup two 3TB WD Red drives in a RAID 1 configuration. They are used solely for storage of my photographs and family videos. Every since I have had random restarts that seem to happen around once per week and usually overnight. I haven't dug into the error report. Any idea what might be causing this?

Solution
Often times warnings for faults in RAID arrays or the underlying drive are greatly dependent upon the type of hard drives you are using and the controller you are using. Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) I have used on quite a few different builds to set up basic RAID 1 arrays, and the utility works pretty well detecting faults with the actually RAID array, but it doesn't always pick up hard drive failures until it is at a pretty severe state, and it really isn't going to monitor data corruption either.

It's going to be hard to say what could be causing the random restarts, which can be caused by so many thing from Windows Updates to power supply issues to driver and software compatibility problems. Check the event log as soon as...
You definitely need to start by looking in the event log right after it happens.

Which intel raid driver are you using?

Just a note, raid 1 isn't a backup - it's only for higher availability. If you aren't backing up the array to an external drive your photos are still at risk. If u already knew that, sorry :)

I am backing up to an online service. My concern was that if a single disk started going bad it might corrupt the data without my realizing it. In RAID 1 wouldn't it alert me to this and verify that the data wasn't degrading?

Check the event log as soon as possible after one of these reboots to determine if there is anything displaying for errors when the reboot occurs.
