LAN into WiFi on phone

I want to know whether I have to keep my computer running if I buy a router to convert my LAN into WiFi.
My friend told me that I can use WiFi on my phone through my USB adapter only, creating a virtual connection.
But for that I will have to keep my computer running.
If I buy a router and connect all my LAN wires into it, will the WiFi keep running even when PC is shut down?

Or can somehow I do it?

You should be using a Router anyway, not a good idea to have a PC connected directly to the modem. Get a router, connect the router to the modem, PC and your wireless devices to the router. The only time you need a computer to stay on is if you are using internet connection sharing on it, which won't be the case if you have a router.

The router is like a truck that carries the data to the other network devices. If you use the truck to transport 2 motorcycles around, you don't keep the motorcycles running as while in the truck right?

I dont have a WiFi connection . I wanted to know whether with a router can I use my LAN in mobile, without keeping computer on, or I have to keep it on?
