I have been using a lenovo laptop for a couple years now but have now noticed a problem. windows thinks i'm running a single core processor instead of a dual core (i have a i3-2330M). This same thing happend on my gaming rig with a i7-3770K only showing 2 cores. I did some research and found it was an os issue so i reinstalled windows 7 and it works great. now back to the laptop, I did not create restore disks when I bought the computer but I can still make them. would creating a restore disk actually help me? or would the restore disk still contain the problem i'm trying to fix?
thanks a ton!

Solution
Win7 Control Panel/Backup and Restore/Create System Image will make an image of the HDD as it is at the time of imaging. Ex: If you made the image on Jan 1, 2010, and you used the image 3 years later to perform a restore, your PC would look like it did on Jan 1, 2010. It would be like taking your HDD out and storing it on a shelf for 3 years.

The restore disk will restore your PC to the way it was when you bought it. If the problem didn't occur then, it shouldn't occur when you restore it. But you'll have to download all the many Windows Updates since then, not to mention all your programs. And then there's all the bloatware and adware that may have originally come with the new PC. Not to mention all the driver updates you may have done since then.

When you have your PC the way you finally like it and it's working as it should do a Windows Backup Disk Image to a large flash drive, portable HDD, or even several CDs. Then re-do it occasionally.

Thats my question though, does windows create the restore disk based on how the system is configured now? or is there some untouched part of the windows installation that the restore disk is created from?
i was planning on wiping the computer and reinstalling the os anyways. does the restore disk offer any benefits over a clean install?

I'm sorry I'm not being very clear. I understand how the system image works, I am wondering about the restore disk that I would make through lenovo. I have not yet made one, but if I do make one, will it act as a "factory restore disk" or a system image? meaning will the restore disk that I make contain OS corruptions like it does now?

That's a bit harder to answer. OEMs have different methods of restoration. The exact explantion should be included in either the hard copy manual that came with the laptop, or the online/on disk manual that came with it. I had a HP laptop that allowed making a disk image similar to the Windows disk image. It also allowed for a complete restore to factory new condition.

But to your initial problem of only one core being used...
Where are you seeing that only one core is being used? Task Manager/Performance? Just one graph?

Both CPU-Z and a Speed fan only show one core. CPU-Z lists 1 core and 2 threads and Speed fan only gives a temp. reading for core 0. My thought is that the problems stems from installing fallout 3. I installed it on my laptop initially and it wouldn't run. I read on a number of forums that fallout 3 had some issues with multi core processors. I followed some instructions and changed some program files in the game to change the number of cores used. anyways long story short, it still didn't work and it turned out that fallout 3 requires a dedicated graphics card, which I don't have in my laptop and thats why it wouldn't work. anyways my feeling is that by changing the program file of fallout 3 it somehow changed how many cores my OS recognizes. doing some reasearch I didn't find any solutions other than reinstalling the OS.

Oh. I see. Funny, my i5 didn't loose any cores when I ran Fallout 3. I'll do some research. That's the first I've heard of that happening. Sometimes folks will see only one graph in Task Manager/Performance. But that's because they have "show one graph" checked instead of "show 1 graph for each CPU"...
