I was in your shoes back in march.
I went with the gigabyte 970a-ud3....and it was cute.
But take it from me;
4 months ago I bought that board and now I have the asus crosshair.

A 970 wont satisfy you; (atleast not satisfy me)
get an extra $35-$45 and get a 990.
the Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 for example.

I mean the 83xx amd cpu's are very overclocking friendly; and is a major feature for a lot of people who are in the cpu market. 990 chipsets are the best for overclocking amd cpu's.

I have an 8320 oc'd to 4.4; and it trades blows all day with my buddys 8350. Maybe opt for the 8320 and use the extra cash on your mobo.
Microcenter knock $40 off motherboards when bought with a processor.

after a second look; you could easily afford a much better board if you buy from microcenter.
The asus m5a99x is exactly $85 when purchased with the fx 8350

I'm glad you put that disclaimer in. The OP didn't state what his priorities or expectations were. There are a lot of boards far cheaper than your crosshair that could/should get an FX-8320 to 4.4Ghz. Complete overkill. Your GA-970A-UD3 should/could with its 8+2 power phase. That said, I completely agree with you about Microcenter bundles - good deals.

I had a 970. and now I have a crosshair. I used my own situation as an example.
I had no choice but to upgrade from the 970 because I got another graphics card. (no crossfire on a 970)
But by all means, don't run out and buy an extravagant motherboard like the crosshair; simply consider all your options.
I wanted something I could count on getting good overclocks on while also having two 16x pcie lanes; thus: crosshair. but there are many other options. Your right, should of asked his intentions....

had I not taken the cheapest route and gone with a 990 I would of never had to go through the hassle of dismantling the entire computer to replace a motherboard...not to mention now having a 970 am3 motherboard being used as a glorified paper weight.

I originally posted because I saw the op is in my shoes when I was at that stage in my build.
And for our situations being what I feel is remarkably similar, I felt I should share a bit of the knowledge I gained after walking the path that he is about to embark on. - having been in his shoes; its only appropriate he view his possibilities from different angles. I rather make an important choice like that after having considered all the options and reading what others say who have been in the same situation; don't you think?
