I wanted to know weather you think this is a good build:

MotherBoard: MSI Z77A-G45
CPU: intel core i5 3rd gen
Power: Corsair Modular CXM 500W
RAM: Kingston 4gb 1333MHz DDR3
Graphics: Asus Nvidia GeForce GT 640 Graphics Card


I know the case and harddrive is missing from the list^^^ but im confident i picked the right parts

A locked CPU is where a CPU's clock multiplier is "locked," so that it is more resistant to overclocking, or increasing its speed after purchase. When he says overkill, he's just saying that you may get the results you need with a lower-end board if you have a locked CPU. The board you selected is better for people who plan to overclock their CPUs or have a more high-end CPU, so if you don't plan to do anything of the sort, get, as Sn1992 said, a H77 or a B75...

To answer your question more specifically, we're going to have to know more about your budget. Plus, you ask if your configuration is a "good build," but that depends on what you're going to be using it for. More details, maybe?

My budget is around 900$, What do you mean by locked cpu? im kind of a noob so im not good with the technical terms, whats overkill?

Z77, H77, and B75 Boards are all chipsets of a motherboard - check out this thread.

thank you, very good answer, looked at overclocking in more detail and i might overkill.
Overall is it a good build? Will it be fast and powerful??
