Are external sound cards any good?

I own a laptop with only onboard sound and want to upgrade my headset and thus I require a sound card/amp? any knowledge on external sound cards or how to use a regular sound card with a laptop would be greatly appreciated. :)

dont get any lower :)

this thing is 114 db SNR :) every 3 SNR more means double sound quality soo keep that in mind , hint : never get sound below that !!!
