Best way to add RAM to my P6T system

I have a Asus P6T mobo with 3*2GB = 6GB (Corsair TR3X6G1333C9) or RAM, with Intel i7 920. I want to run some virtual machines so more RAM would come in handy.

I probably don't even need that much added, just 4GB to bring the total to 10GB would be fine. However - I'm concerned about all the tri-channelness and everything.

If I just add one 4GB stick, will it make my system slower?

Am I supposed to add three 4GB sticks instead? Assuming I keep the 3*2GB I have right now, will it help if I get something faster than the 1333 Mhz or will it be limited to 1333 Mhz anyway due to the other set being that?

Since you have 3 x 2 = 6GB RAM, all you had to do is insert another 3 x 2 GB = 6GB, totaling 12GB of triple channel configuration. Also if possible buy the same type of RAM that you already have for maximum compatibility and performance. If you insert a different speed RAM, then the system would run at the speed of the slowest RAM on your motherboard ie: If you mix 1333 mhz and a 1600mhz RAMs then both the RAM would run at 1333mhz

Adding a single 4GB module is not recommended better go with three modules of the same speed and size. Yes, you can go with 1600MHz and 1866MHz which are stable with your processors, speeds higher than that is not known to be stable with your PC. Though, higher speed memory will work it will be downclocked when mixed with lower speed memory but you may benefit in the future if you are replace the existing 3 x 2GB modules.

To RUN VM's IMO, go with atleast 16GB or higher. More the memory the better you will benefit from it. For compatible try the below website or Newegg or amazon - http://www.memorystock.com/memory/ASUSP6TMotherboardDDR31600MHz.html

Cheers, mate!!

Mixing sticks is not recommended especially at 1600 and higher, there's no guarantee they will work together, XMP won't work, as it's programmed by the packaged set, so setup of the timings, advanced timings, DRAM voltage and prob MC voltage will have to be set manually, unless you luck into a set that will play nice at default boot settings...The best bet, to avoid wasting time and money is a 3x$GB set
