Alternative ways to Power On a PC

My case sits in a difficult to reach location behind and under my desk. The power button is also behind a front cover making access to it challenging.

I used to have a PS2 keyboard and used the Bios to allow Power On By Keyboard. This allowed me to switch off and on without me ever needing to access my case.

I have just moved to a USB wireless keyboard and lost this ability as Power On by USB is not supported (by any MB?). I am therefore looking for an alternative way to do this without using the case power button. I am currently using sleep/hibernate but would prefer a complete power off/on solution.

Any ideas? Are there PS2 adapter-based Power On devices? Are there any USB work-arounds?

you can sacrifice a ps2 device if you want. You'll have to do some DIY stuff but. Or you can use a small button with a 1 meter or something length wire to make a power switch.
Let me know if you need details for the latter one.

can you have line of site to the DVD bays ? if so get the remote control IR , and the bay and use the remote to turn it on and off ...

and this :)

And you can use your PC more conveniently to watch media files and turn on/off your PC with remote control.

you will have a nice Equalizer too :) , or just remote if no screen :)

Intriguing. I assume I would need to cannibalise the existing power button to achieve this?

Yup, I already do this. The problems with it are that the PC can easily be woken by a stray hand/cat/wife/cleaner :)>) and that is fine for certain circumstances but a complete power off is pretty fool proof even with the PS2 CTRL ESC option. I want the peace of mind knowing it is off rather than sleeping even if the power usage is very similar.

Nah I dont think you have to "cannibalise" the existing one. But you will need a spare button to use for the purpose. like this one.

Basically any button that completes the circuit when pressed will do the work. You will need to make a connection inside however, which won't be hard to do.
