I ordered a 500 GB Velociraptor Enterprise drive from Newegg. When the drive arrived it had no heatsink. Newegg assured me I received exactly what I ordered, i.e., nothing was missing. I called Western Digital support, gave them the WD product number and was told "that drive should have had a heatsink". Western Digital support was great in sending the exact same model number Velociraptor, WD5000BHTZ three times; all 3 with no heat sink. Yesterday WD Support informed me the Velociraptor with a heatsink had HHTZ in the model number. Two of the three drives are on their way back to WD. I am doing a swap for the remaining Velociraptor.
WD Support informed me the Velociraptor Enterprise drive is used in servers. I am building my first PC using a Cooler Master HAF 932 case, and Hyper 212 fan heatsink assembly. Browsing tom's Hardware forums I saw a number of posts saying the velociraptor's heatsink (ice pack) increased its noise level much more than decreasing its temperature.
Could I install a WD 500 GB Velociraptor with no heatsink in my HAF 932 case without "frying" the drive? Thanks in advance for any insights or suggestions.
