Hi,

I have the motherboard ASUS P5AD2-E and I've replaced the old CPU Intel Celeron D 346 with a new one Intel Pentium 4 640 HT (I must mention that I have used the same CPU cooler Cooler Master Vortex 752).

After I've put every part back I've powered the desktop and:

* I can hear the "magical" bip from the motherboard
* Motherboard screen appears with possibility of selecting either DEL (enter BIOS) or TAB, F8 (boot)

but the screen just freeze.
Also the keyboard (old one in PS2) starts to be "dead" from this moment (when I power the desktop the keyboard led's are ON).

Could you please give me your opinion on this issue.

thank you in advance!

Have you updated the bios? Stick your old CPU back in and update it and try again. Can also be heat related make sure your heat sink on the CPU is on right. Re seat memory make sure aux power(4 pin) on motherboard is plugged in and the fan on your heat sink is plugged in.

I just looked at a site called cpu support and it said any revision of that board or bios would run that chip so i suspect it has a basic bios for dell that doesnt.
Flash and be lucky,SEE if asus say it will support better chips than those as they are both pants except for surfing.

Hi,

Regarding points stated by chriss000 :

"make sure your heat sink on the CPU is on right" → I have placed correctly
"Re seat memory" → I have 4 DDR2 that fill the 4 slots. I will rearrange them and see the result.
" make sure aux power(4 pin) on motherboard is plugged in and the fan on your heat sink is plugged in." → both AUX PWR cable (4pin) and the heat sink fun PWR cable are connected to motherboard.

I must mention that:
* when BIOS screen is shown the Intel Pentium 4 logo is displayed. I assume the the CPU is OK and works fine.
* I had a look on ASUS website at motherboard P5AD2-E and it supports Intel Pentium 4. Also this CPU choice was made after I have consulted the cpu-upgrade site.

I'm writing above points to display a better track on my issue.

I will place back my old CPU + update BIOS (just saw that there is an updated version on ASUS website) and will let you know if it works.

Many thanks for your time on this issue.

Hi,

I have put back the old CPU and made the update for BIOS from Windows by using an ASUS utility (first I have made a backup to existing BIOS, downloaded the latest updated BIOS version from ASUS website and made the update with the utility) and it worked.

Placed back the new CPU and now everything is OK :)

We can consider this issue solved.

Thank you for support thently and chriss000.
