options for increasing reliability

My apologies in advance for posting a question which has likely been asked frequently; I suppose I'm too ignorant to even know where to look for an existing answer. Disclaimers aside though...

I have recently rented a room on the main floor of a house, with internet connection being provided as part of the rent - wirelessly.

However, since moving in several weeks ago, I've found the reliability of the connection to be poor (despite the sys tray icon showing very good to excellent signal strength).

There is a door at one end of my suite which separates the suite from the landlord's portion of the house; I've found through experimentation that placing my laptop immediately adjacent to this door usually (but not invariably) enables the acquisition of a connection.

Initially, moving the laptop away from the door would then terminate the connection. At the suggestion of my brother (who works for the ISP as a TSR), I asked the landlord to ask the ISP about the problem and to inquire about changing the radio channel.

The landlord left me a note saying the problem was fixed. I have not yet followed up with the landlord to find out exactly what was done to correct the issue.

Since then, I've found that the laptop still needs to be placed near the door to acquire a connection, but that it will now often retain the connection away from the door once initially established.

However, there are still occasions during which no connection is available. The landlord has indicated that the cable modem is located upstairs at the opposite end of the house. I don't want to impose upon my landlord too aggressively in terms of asking him for modifications in the setup of his household.

What options might be available to me to satisfy the following (in order of priority desired):
(i) to ensure an absolutely reliable connection, and,
(ii) to retain the convenience of wireless within my suite, and,
(iii) to possibly enable the option of wired connectivity (since my Kodak ESP9 all in one printer has always seemed to have difficulty with a wireless connection).

One option I've considered is to ask the landlord to let me place the modem on the cable line-in in my suite, and set up the router to provide wireless to him through his portion of the house, but I'm not sure whether he'd be comfortable with this. I'd like to identify possible solutions and costs before talking with him again.

Thank you in advance for the commentary.

@Tourist: Firstly, thank you for your comments and time.
• Re: own service:
That's definitely one option I've considered, and am by no means ruling out. I am however, "between opportunities"
(as they say in the trades :) ) and would like to find the least cost reliable solution to the situation for the moment.
• Re: wireless repeater and install it just outside your door.
This is more along the lines of what I was thinking of for the moment.
Can you elaborate a little on what you might recommend for implementing this?

• Re: IEEE 802.3/802.3u
This is definitely an interesting solution, and one which I'd not considered. Although just slightly more pricey than I'd prefer, it still appears to be in the doable price range (and would be offset by the price of about one month's internet service since I'm currently residing in Canada). And I'm confident my landlord would be comfortable with this.
Can you comment on the reliability/pros/cons of this type of setup?
• Re: DDWRT:
I'm still checking out the link you provided for this. I may have to come back for more clarification later.

Thank you all for the great suggestions.
