Solved

I upgraded to windows 8.1 now i want to revert back to windows 8

To make a long story short i upgraded to windows 8.1 preview, and now i need to revert back to windows 8. I made a backup before i did it but my nephew got a hold of my flash drive and chewed it up and now it doesnt work. I use my computer mainly for gaming and most of my games either dont work or they run terribly on 8.1

So with no backup my choices are very limited, but i do have a windows 8 pro product key. So my question is, can i use the key to revert back to windows 8?

Second, if i am able to revert back using the product key, will i be starting all over, by losing all my saved games and documents that i have on my computer?

Or if you guys know another way to revert back please let me know.

Thanks

Save all your critical and personal data elsewhere.
    Full reinstall.

Just using the product key won't 'revert back'. Win 8.1 was mostly a full reinstall, as will going to Win 8 will be.

That is why they suggested creating a USB recovery drive before going forward.

    From the 8.1 FAQ:
"If you're running Windows 8 and you install the preview using the ISO, you won't be able to uninstall it. You'll need to reinstall Windows 8 using recovery or installation media that came with your PC. If you don't have recovery media, you might be able to create a USB recovery drive. For more info, see Create a USB recovery drive."
  2. Came across the following article, since you lost your back-up, it seems like your only solution is to reinstall Windows 8:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/5b1efb21-8711-464a-874f-49ed60eb8746/how-to-downgrade-from-windows-81-to-windows-8-
  3. I decided it was time to undo my Windows 8.1 preview, so I plugged the original bootable USB ISO image of Windows 8 into my Tablet while running Windows 8.1. I then ran the Setup of the Windows 8 image from the thumb drive. To my amazement it treated the 8.1 preview as an older OPS and allowed me to install Windows 8 as an upgrade maintaining all my settings and installed apps. So I allowed the install to go forward, and booted into Windows 8 to find all my apps and existing files and most setting intact. I had to repair Windows Office 2013 to get it working but everything else was there. The Windows 8.1 preview had been place in the Windows.Old folder. This was a welcomed turn of events to be able to revert back to Windows 8, even though everywhere I read Microsoft says it cannot do this. Hope this helps anyone else trying to get back there Windows 8 install after installing the 8.1 preview, one last point I had to reinput my Windows 8 key to get the install to complete.

  5. Aartjan mulder: This is a very old thread that was closed (solution already found). You should start a new thread instead because your issue could be different from the OP. Also note that it says you need to use a "Recovery USB key" (not sure what you mean by "resource disk").

  7. I did the system refresh not restore, and i reverted back to windows 8 with all my data but the icon of the games might of change, which would change back itself after u restart the computer.
