I own a COMPAQ PRESARIO SR1130NX DESKTOP.it says maximum ram is 1gb , the motherboard manufacture says 2gb tho. I plan to go to windows 7 so it can support the new ram cards I install. Would tis work tho?

Solution

I have no idea. Probably your computer won't know how to address the RAM and won't be able to boot. Worst case it somehow damages your system.

Very worst case your house blows up.

Crucial says 2Gb so 2Gb will probably work, but you may need to update the bios before hand. After looking at the system specs I wouldn't suggest running any OS newer than XP. 7 will run but not very well, and you may have difficulty finding drivers as the hardware was all obsolete long before 7 was released. XP will run better than 7 on that system. Do don't need & for the new ram xp will support 2Gb just fine.

Okay, I planned on upgrading the processor and gpu tho (phenom II x4 695 , radeon 7950 ) can those be supported or no, I asked on another site . The answer on it was yes but I don't know for sure if its right.

That's the motherboard, not the system with the proper bios. You can't assume the BIOS is the same in his system as the base motherboard. Manufacturers always run different BIOSes depending on the application of the board.

I do think it can take 2GB, maybe I should have made that more clear, but the specs for his system clearly say 1GB. Do the BIOS check in my link to be sure.

Its the way HP did their specs, when you look at the system specs they show what the max that they shipped/tested with that system, with this model it was 512Mb base with a 1Gb max, the motherboard manufacture tested 2Gb so 2Gb is listed for the motherboard specs This is why they have a separate specs and its get confusing as hell but I would be very surprised if the system didn't work with 2 1gb modules. If you are worried order through a place like corsair or crucial and get what the scanner/memory config tool shows and if for some reason it doesn't work they will let you return it for a refund.

^ True, however, I have seen different motherboards shipped with different BIOSes. Dell does this on their servers. Same motherboard, but cheaper models have different things disabled.

HP could very well do this. They would make one board and use it on a range of systems, making you buy the more expensive model to get more ram, just in the same way GPU makers make one die, and sell the half broken GPUs as lesser models.

I suggested the check so he could see for sure, to save time, frustration, money(?). It's an easy check too. And as I mentioned, it's quite likely it will show 2GB, but I'd check to be sure. :)
