So i currently have a
AMD Athlon x2 215 2.7Ghz 1MB L2Cache

and im thinking of getting a
AMD Phenom 2 x4 945 3.0Ghz

will it be noticably faster or is it slower?

Solution
Wow, Phenom X4 has 2 times the cores as Athlon X2, so as an additional L3 cache than Athlon. If for office usage u wouldn't find. However, in multitasking and gaming u'll soon find out the difference.

It depends on what your doing. If your just a occasional renderer go with the phenom. If you just web browse and watch movies go with the athlon. Although I would highly recommend a CPU in the FX series.

My friend switched from the athlon II x2 240 2.8ghz to the same phenom II x4 945, theres quite a bit of performance gain, but going with a 3.2-3.4ghz cpu like the 955/965 would be better as the 945 bottlenecked a 5850 that my pc didnt at stock speeds. But the gain was alot better than the dual core even in dual core use games as its higher clock and its l3 cache.

Matters on ur gpu and ur motherboard on what u can upgrade too and what u should upgrade too, name some things u use the pc for but in general the quad core at a faster speed will obviously be faster than ur dual core in basically everything lol

The Reason im talking about the Phenom 2 x4 945 is because i have a Narra 5 Motherboard and it says the max CPU TDP is 95 and it Dosent support FX Series this is the List of Upgrades it can use :

TDP: 95W
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
NOTE:Only socket AM2+ processors are supported with this motherboard.
AMD Phenom II Quad-Core
AMD Phenom II Triple-Core
AMD Phenom Quad-Core (A) 9xxx series (AM2+)
AMD Phenom Triple-Core (T) 8xxx series (AM2+)
AMD Athlon X4
AMD Athlon X3
AMD Athlon X2 (B) (AM2+)

Can you Tell me Which Is the best choice?

to switch over to am3+ and something like a fx 6300 and 8gb ddr3 low end will cost roughly $250 or $70 for the board, $60 for ram, and $120 for cpu, but if u can find a new 945 or 955 new from tigerdirect or a different site for under $100 do it. but max it can prob take is the 955 as its the highest 95watt cpu, but there are 125watt versions of it. I got my friends 945 for $80 off tigerdirect new. U can also go with the Athlon II X4 640, which is a 95watt cpu and is basically the phenom 945 without l3 cache and is basically a 3.0ghz quad core version of ur dual core

did you upgrade from the phenom 945 to something else? and will it still be kinda good like noticibly fast for rendering 720p videos and playing games? i am expecting it to be in the middle of fast and superfast? x)
and the phenom 2 x4 945 should be faster than the Athlon since it has the L3 cache? right?
