Hi! I have a Dell Precision T5500 PC, and am looking to upgrade it's CPU. I was wondering if anyone would know whether or not the Intel Xeon W3570 will work with the T5500 motherboard. I can't seem to find anything so I figured I would create a thread here. Any help will be appreciated! Thank you!

Hunter2451,

After years fussing with Dell Precisions and thinking of buying a used T5500 or T7500, I'd never heard of the W3570. Checking the Intel ARK site is always useful as it has logical lists of every Intel CPU and the compatible chipsets.

The W3570 is LGA1366, has a 45nm lithography and shares other features with T5500 CPU's and seems to have been used in servers. It supports 24GB RAM. The performance is reasonable, being No. 96 with a CPU score of 7176 on Passmark CPU benchmarks where No. 98 is the i5-3570K. They're inexpensive as parts on Ebay and I only saw servers that use them. In my budget/ market logic, if they were useful in desktops, with a good performance they would be more expensive, but that's not...

However, Precisions are close cousins to servers and I did find a T5500 with a W3570 for sale >

That is a strange one, difficult to be definitive based on seeing one T5500 in India using it. But, looking around for T5500's for sale or that were sold with the W3570 might be a way to confirm it's usefulness .

It may be a "sleeper" that would be an excellent bargain or it may have some server oriented detail that makes it fussy for desktop use.
