Hello, I am trying to build a new gaming computer and I am somewhat confused by all the different motherboard options out there. Right now I am trying to decide on the best option out of the following to overclock my system. (This is my first attempt at overclocking so I don't know if the Mobo will make a big difference.)

All of these come bundled with the i5-4670k at $199 and a decent discount

MSI z87-G41 - $55

ASRock z87 Extreme4 - $100

Asus z87-A - $105

Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5H - $150

Microcenter is running a bundle deal so they seem to be a bit cheaper than anything I have seen online.

Since it has been a long time since I last built a computer (roughly 5 years) I haven't kept up with many of the recent changes. I want to make sure I am going the right route and getting the best value for my money.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Microcenter)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.98 @ Outlet PC)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($70.33 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($179.99 @ Adorama)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 760 2GB Video Card ($249.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Fractal Design Define XL R2 (Titanium Grey) ATX Full Tower Case ($124.76 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: Fractal Design Integra R2 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($68.00 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ Newegg)

This is a listing of the rest of my build in case I am way off and should be looking at something different all together.

Asrock Extreme 4 Is Budget and Feature Rich Board. But for a Gigabyte board. a UD4H is enough.

or an Asrock Extreme 6 is a better board than Extreme 4.

Asus boards improve well. From Features to Software (AI Suite III). but for the aesthetics. (Gold? EWW?!)

MSI has good boards too. But i heard rumors that they have some issues. Well its your choice.

For a gamer. A gaming board is needed.

a gaming board MUST consists:

-A Solid Board for overclocking.
-A better onboard audio
-A Good Port like Killer Lag or Intel Lan

These are the budget gaming boards that represent each company

Asrock
Fatal1ty Professional (Slightly Expensive)
Extreme 6
Extreme 6/AC
Asus
Maximus VI Hero...

I have just built a new Rig, like you after the old one was 5 years old. But I have built Gamer Boxes for my son, and nephew in recent years - as well as other Rigs for Friends and Family. My new Rig has the Asus Z87-A & Intel 4770K. There are many ways to O/C this board they have a switch on the MB that will get you past the Turbo level. Their Ai Suite III software get it to 4.3 GHz easily (one button) using the Fast Tune right from Windows. (However I can seem to get this to go to the Max when I try their Xtreme Tune.) Of course you can go into Bios and manually tweak everything. It's quite amazing where they at now.

IMHO you really shouldn't focus on O/C for a Gamer Box. For Gaming it's all now about the Graphics Card(s). (Not like 5 years ago where you had to tweak everything.) Running today's most intense games typically only load up a CPU less than 50% so the benefits of doing a serious O/C aren't there. Now if you were into an application that is CPU intensive (Like Video Rendering) then the O/C would be a real benefit. My intent is to do this with the Z87-A I guess you could too, even if you won't need it.

I hope this is helpful.
