Stored files on External Hard Drive, now disappeared!

My MacBook Pro had to be re-formatted for a server upgrade at work, so copied my entire work folder to my 1TB Touro Mobile MX3. Double and triple checked the files were on the external HDD, checked that random files would open. All fine. Next day went to copy data back to my newly re-formatted Mac and the file (called Work) is not there. Instead there is an alias Work which leads to nothing. Used disk utility to analyse the HDD and it shows over 1700 folders (consistent with the amount of work I had on there) but I can't see them, can't work out how to find them. Our tech guy had a quick look and he is puzzled too. Any help SO GRATEFULLY received - this is five year's worth of work I can't find.

Are the files just hidden then? Im not real sure how to work on hdd's but i know they have a show or hide folder option. See if this helps...Be careful with this though there are hidden files for a reason that SHOULD NOT be deleted :/

No, the files seem to have completely disappeared. However, I know they are there because when I check the INFO on the hard drive it tells me there are over 1,700 folders and over 6,000 files. This is way more than what is showing as being present so it seems that they are there somewhere, I just can't see them or any other sign of them.
