No Sound, Error code 41?

Recently I lost all sound on my PC. PC is running Windows XP Home and in device manager everything under, "Sound, Video & game controllers has a yellow ! and says "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

Can anybody help with a solution. Most error code 41 solutions seem to apply to CD/DVD drives not sound

Delete the devices from device manager, download the drivers from the PC vendor and check again. When did this issue start? Anything get installed/uninstalled?

I've tried that, with no effect. Been like this about a month. Can't remember anything changing much around then

If you are sure you have the right drivers for the hardware and operating system, you can just get an add on sound card or try re-installing Windows and installing the drivers clean.

Have tried a stand alone sound card and it also gets the same error. Not keen on re-installing windows! Would a "repair" work?

A repair setup may do the trick, since you tried a different sound card it seems that something in Windows is messing up rather than the sound card drivers.
