Hello, I have recently built a computer and in an effort to save money I am using a HDD from my previous laptop. upon booting up the computer everything works perfectly until windows attempts to start, it fails to start and forces me to do a system repair which concludes that the problem cannot be fixed automatically. My computer will not start and all of the manual options to fix don't help whatsoever please help!

There you go. You cannot do that. You need to reinstall Windows when you change hardware.

Also you cannot use the recovery CD that came with the laptop to install Windows on your new build because it comes pre-configured with drivers for the hardware of the laptop and not your new build so you would get the same problem.

Also note that the Windows license you were using on the laptop cannot be transferred to another computer because it's an OEM license. You would need to buy a new Windows...

That's the problem with an OEM license. It is only legal on the original machine. They don't give out DVDs anymore so you can't cheat.

You could try this if you still have the OEM product key that came with the laptop...

As far as I know, Dell is the only company that still ships real Windows disks. But they don't give them by default with the system, you just get the regular recovery CD like any other company. You need to call them and ask for it, and they will ship you a real Windows CD for free. I did it recently for my personal laptop and many colleagues and friends also did it these recent years.

*** When I say "real Windows disk" it's almost true. It has a Dell logo on it, and it will detect in your BIOS if it's a Dell system or not, otherwise it will refuse to install (I know I tested it on a HP computer lol) but on any Dell system it will work. The installation process is exactly the same as with a clean Windows install you have the option to partition and format the drive and when you get to Windows for the first time you have no driver, no anti-virus, no tools, no crap, just like a real clean install.
