HDD in Mobile Rack not recognized

I removed a 2TB WD Green (yuck) from it's casing and installed it for use in a mobile rack.
1st PC is running win8 pro. I popped the HDD in the rack, formated the drive and set it up as an MBR - Basic Disk. Began using it to back stuff up and then remove from my machine.

2nd PC is running win7 ultimate. Popped the disk in the rack, but it does not recognize it. If I leave the disk in the rack when booting then win7 recognizes it, but as offline and unpartitioned.

Also an additional note.
The win7 machine was set to IDE in BIOS. Before attempting to use the mobile rack I switched it to AHCI after altering the proper key in the registry (so as not to have to reinstall my os). Maybe this has something to do with the problem?

Is this is a problem related to different OS's on each machine?

Help! I need to be able to use this HDD on both machines to back up files and then remove.

Thanks in advance to all those brave (and knowledgeable) enough!

I have had issues like this with my HDD bays when I didn't shut my machine down before removing a SATA connected disk. You could also try reinitializing and reformating the disk on the Windows 7 machine and then seeing if the Windows 8 machine can recognize it.

If you continue to have issues, leave the disk in the Windows 7 machine, start up as normal, and run diskmgmt.msc and see if the disk is listed there and what its status is.

I like your idea of reformatting on the win7 machine and then seeing if the win8 recognizes it. Just a bummer about all the data already written to the disk.
Your second suggestion I have already done. When I boot the win7 machine with that HDD in the rack, it recognizes it as an offline and unpartitioned disk.

I had issues like this when I had one machine with Windows 8 and my laptop (accessed using a HDD caddy in my optical drive slot) running Windows 7. My previous machine lacked an external drive bay, so I eventually got a SATA/IDE to USB adapter enclosure so I could close my side panel. I had issues getting either machine to recognize the drive right away, but after I reinitialized it on the Windows 7 laptop and reformatted it, it would work through USB on either machine.
