OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
PSU: Corsair GS500
CPU: AMD FX-6300
GPU: Radeon HD 7870
MoBo: AsRock 970
RAM: 8Gb G.skill Sniper
HDD(s): WD Caviar Blue 640GB, WD Caviar Green 2TB

So, I recently decided to build a new pc, upgrading all the parts, including the HDD. Everything went fine, parts worked, BIOS worked etc. After that the problems started.

I hooked up my old HDD to move some files to the new one, but, for some reason it now reboots every time it get's to the Windows logo screen. Before it reboots the blue screen flashes shortly: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".

I thought the problem would be in the new pc, but when I hooked it back to the old pc, in which it was working a few hours ago, i get the same scenario.
For some reason (which i now see to have been stupid), I decide to test it again with another pc running Vista. Well now Vista won't boot either...

When I try to re-install Windows 7 on the old HDD, it always installs 1% (Which takes it 20 min) and then says it's unable to install the rest of it.

I've never before had any problems with this particular HDD (WD Caviar Blue) until now. I figure it's a virus since every other HDD it has contact with get's the same problems. Windows won't install on the newer HDD, and i haven't tried it yet on the Vista.

I'm not in the mood of buying 3 new HDD's, 2 Windows 7 Ultimate's and 1Vista, so I hope someone here has an answer to my problem, and thank you in advance if you figure it out.

If you can, try to install Windows 7 or 8 instead. Because Microsoft will officially drop support for XP on April 1st 2014 which is coming fast. After this date, no more patches and security updates so your system will be at risk if you use it to browse the web.

From what you're describing this isn't a virus, but a defective disk.

But I don't understand why you say you would need to buy 3 new disks and 3 new Windows licenses??? As far as I know only 1 of your disk is defective.

But could the fact that I moved the disk from 1 pc to another defect it, when it was working a few minutes before that.

And if I was unclear in my post, now none of the 3 disks are working. They don't boot, i can't re-install windows, and Windows can't repair them.

At the moment, I expect the WD Blue drive to be lying on a table somewhere because he seemed to be the one starting the trouble so we need it out of the equation.

When you try to reinstall Windows on any of those PCs, do you reformat the drive before?

Also, did you try to boot in safe mode on any of these PCs and use System Restore?

Well safe mode didn't work, and System restore didn't do Much.

But luckily after 2 days of frustration i found my old XP, and installed it on one of the drives. Booting with XP worked fine (without the caviar Blue plugged in, of course) let's just hope i can fix it now that i can access it.
