Odd that it even booted up with you just swappping drives like that, but if it's looking for drivers and you download the right ones, and you install them the right way, it should install them. How are you trying to install the drivers? Did you read the instructions and got the right drivers for the right model and the right operating system?

why is that odd? its a hdd with an operating system. shouldnt it boot up? ( not being smart just curious ). i went onto toshibas website, typed in myvmodel number ( satelite l505d-gs6000 ) and downloaded them and installed them and restarted my laptop. all the downloads did say for windows 7 however, i just assumed they would be backwards compatible or something since i could not find Any for vista. now i did probably have the drivers for my compaq downloaded. ould i need to uninstall all of my drivers before trying to install new ones? also i bought the recovery disks for my toshiba off the website. will it have my drivers on it? and would it be possible to fix my old hard drive. it had a non genuine copy okf windows 7 and i am not trying to buy a new hdd or new os. i would rather save to build a pc over doing that for my toshiba. thank you for responding btw.

No, the drivers would not be backwards compatible. Some may work, but not likely. A drive from another system often does not boot, the hardware drivers are different as is the motherboard drivers which contain the hard drive controller. Basically, the system won't see the hard drive past the BIOS and won't know where to load Windows from.

If you have a physical issue with the drive, it will be a lot more expensive to repair it than just bying a new one. You also broke the usage agreement for Windows by moving the operating system from one computer to another, if it's an OEM version, it's tied to the system it was first installed on. If they have the Windows license keys on the computers, you can just get the OEM disks from the vendor and re-install Windows.
