Phanteks PH-TC14PE questions

Hi,

Just some random questions about the Phanteks PH-TC14PE cooler: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835709001

1- Is this a good cooler ? Can it replace a liquid cooler like the Corsair H100 ?

2- Will it fit inside a Define R4 case from Fractal Design ? If yes, will it prevent me from placing my RAM sticks ?

3- What 8 GB RAM do you recommend with that cooler ?

Great cooler I own 2 , you need low profile ram.

Yes it can hang with a h100i.

Won't fit case can hold 170mm cooler

I search on the web and find this video where they make a build with the Define R4 and have the exact same cooler. But we can't really see if the RAM touch the cooler or just barely fit. Can you answer me please ?

If it has the clearance he claims in the video , ram should be fine , my LP ram slightly touches my phanteks,From the looks of the video it fits easy and hitech legion does nice reviews.I would say no problems.

Also it's very easy to install , and keeps CPU cool.

I use the PH-TC14PE in my system and my Gskill ripjaws x fits just fine. But something taller like corsair vengeance or dominator probably wouldn't. I just had to install the ram before the cooler and pray I never have to reseat it. Its a great cooler btw.

The H100 outperforms the Phantwks by 1/2 degree C .... but a) it's noisy as hell and b) there's water in ya system dude ! Id want a lot more than 1/2 degree to have a water system

However, this performance comes at a cost; noise. At 2600RPM, the H100 isn’t a quiet unit at all and similarly at 2000RPM, it can still be quite intrusive. In terms of performance per noise, high end air coolers from Phanteks, Noctua and Thermalright still reign supreme, contrary to Corsair’s own marketing. Like other ALC units, the H100 relies too much on high RPM fans for its performance when the goal of water cooling is generally for extreme performance at low noise levels.

I don't use the R4 preferring the Corsair 500R which tho it has a $140 MSRP can usually be had for well under $100 on newegg (not today tho). Wait 4-5 days and it will be back below $100. You should be able to pick up the 1mm (171mm typical cooler height versus 170mm room in the R4 by just dropping the fan off center by 1mm as indicated on the Phanteks web site. This should not be a problem with the RAM below if its less than 39mm

Forget RAM with those silly and useless tall toothy heat sinks....the only cooling function they serve is to "look cool". I have been using these:
