Hi Guys,

Yesterday, my PC shut down abruptly while working on it due to voltage fluctuation.

When it restarted, one of my main partition where I dumped my work files and which was named earlier Workstation(H) stopped responding and its drive name was changed to Local Disk(H)

Now, when I try to access it, it do not open. When I left click on this drive letter it says ' The disk in drive H is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?'

I tried to copy the files from this drive using command prompt and when I try to access it, an error shows saying:

' Data error ( cyclic redundancy check )"

Luckily, I had a latest back up and also I saved my latest data to an external drive by using a utility called testdisk-6.14.win successfully.

Now, my question is can I restore this partition back to earlier stage or is my hard disk is corrupt now.

PC is working fine and other drives like D, E, F and G can be easily accessed. Only drive H is not accessible.

Should I change my hard disk?

Thanks for your help in advance.

My guess would be that it shut down in the middle of a write and corrupted the drive. You will probably need to reformat the drive to use it again. If there was anything critical that was not backed up you could try Recuva.

For the future it would be a good idea to consider a UPS. APC is an excellent brand and has a hardware/software link to automatically shutdown your computer in an orderly fashion to prevent this type of thing when the power fails for a prolonged period.

Thanks a lot for your answer. Yes it shut down in the middle while I was working and though I was on UPS but still do not know how it happened :)

All critical data is backed up already and my fear was should I still keep on using this hard drive or purchase new one for safety?

Regarding formatting, will I have reformat the full hard drive and create new partitions again or I can right click on corrupt partition and format that part only?

Thanks in advance
Jay
