Upgrade to 8 @ 30$? Worth it?

Hello,
I currently have a Win7 Home Premium, upgrade version, that was upgraded on Win XP software. Both are 64 bit.

My PC is made for heavy gaming, therefore I want the cleanest and smoothest system installed.

Now I wish to have a better, cleaner install.
We have a sale at the university, I can buy Win7 Ultimate at 30$ and also Win8 Upgrade at 30-35$.
So the total package is at the great price of 60-65 $.

Is upgrading to Win 8 worth it? (I wish I could just buy Win8 full version, but only upgrade is for sale at this price).
If I buy the upgrade version - I guess I only have to install Win7 and then install Win 8 right away right?
Will using Win8 upgrade version make 100% of Win 8 potential?? or will that negatively affect performance?

The reason I upgrade is mainly for a smoother and faster system. And I have heard that Win8 is safer, and lighter.

no ... stay with Win 7 ..

besides , Win 8.1 is coming

Will 8.1 be a downloadable upgrade only? will it be free upgrade for Win 8 owners? Will it be any better or more convinient for desktop gaming pc users? Because buying 8.1 full version might cost a fortune..

Other than that - I think I buy the Win7 Ultimate then. I mean for 30$ it is worth it, and I won't have to relay on the very old Winxp disc I have. Also when I installed XP on my ssd, I had to remove a certain speed giving feature in bios, and then re-apply it when installing Win7....
Therefore I rather go for a clean, independet install, for better performance and all.
When Win8.1 comes I might not be able to get it for an affordable price...

So what should I do? BUY WIN7 ULTIMATE AND STICK WITH IT ? OR Buy Win 7 Ultimate + Win 8 upgrade?

(ps. I don't mind formatting my pc. Now is the best time)

I think there is an offer if you buy win8 now you get upgrade free ...

check with your offer at school and see if the same.

and I like win 7 more , so yes get win 7 ultimate , and later upgrade to win 8.1

I think your school will also offer 8.1 for 30$

Yes... but since I can only accuire Win8 Upgrade version, I will still need to buy that Win7 Ultimate (because I want to clean install my Winxp+win7upgrade). So I pretty much need to buy Win7, I just thought, ok lets not upgrade to Win8 now, lets wait for 8.1 to become available.
Question is.... Will there be an option to upgrade from 7 to 8.1? will that be downloadable from Microsoft? like an update, or only on physical copies? I mean... should I just buy the 2 systems (7 + 8) and wait for 8.1 upgrade?

an upgrade works with any version , you can upgrade to win 8 from Win Vista or Win 7 ...
