Is the 670 SLi THAT much better than 760 SLi?

I am building a pc to render for 3D. Currently, VRAY, Blender, Octane, 3DS MAX and Maya all have some form of real time rendering. VRAY, Blender, and Octane will actually render out using the GPU and it's much faster than CPU cores (Unless you have a render farm).

I think I've hit a limit on spending and I'm not sure I'd be able to afford the dual 670s. Should I just pull the trigger with the 760s or should I scout ebay like a falcon and buy a couple of used 670s?

If you're considering going dual 760's then I'd go single 770, honestly the performance difference between the 670 and the 760 isn't HUGE and if you absolutely must have SLI then the 760's are a solid set of cards.

For support, reliability and peace of mind you pretty much have to choose a single more powerful card. Most CUDA or OpenCL accelerated programs will only support single cards and then there are a few that will support Crossfire/SLI. I would reccomend selling your current card and picking up a GTX770 if you want more grunt.

If it is CUDA performance that you're looking for you may want to stick with Kepler based cards:

GeForce GTX 770 - 1536 CUDA cores
GeForce GTX 670 - 1344 CUDA cores
GeForce GTX 760 - 1152 CUDA cores
GeForce GTX 580 - 512 CUDA cores

If you're looking for OpenCL performance then go grab a 7950 or a 7970 for pure OpenCL grunt

More isn't better as the shadders are far less complex and perform way less operations

I can not locate it at this time but there was an article about 2 week ago here on toms showing exactly what I am stating. It shows the 580 well above the 680 and thereby the 770 in compute performance by a respectable and worthwhile margin.

The 580 was and still is an absolute monster.

Ah, there's too much information going on all at once.

The 580's remain king in the world of GPU rendering (aside from the Titan) but how much longer is that going to last? What about 2.69 if they decide to use CUDA 5.5? Judging from these prices the 580 is out of my price range anyway if I want to run SLi. I think $250 is where I want to stay for SLi. 2 760s and any card above in SLi seems to beat the Titan for games. In other benchmarks, aside from the 580 (which I haven't seen any benchmarks in SLi) that has been the same. How long is the 770 going to hover around the $400 mark when you can have 2 760's that beat out a Titan? Why are people suggestion 1 770 when it comes no where close to the performance of 2 760's for the money?

I do have to continue thinking about the gaming world as well because I enjoy it as well.
