DDR3 choice for best compatibility with existing memory

Existing memory in setup:
Geil 2x2Gb @1333Mhz 7-7-7-24
GV34GB1333C7DC

I was informed in a previous thread that if I want to upgrade to 8Gb that I should try to match brand/frequency/CAS latency if possible for the additional 2x2GB however this series from Geil is discontinued which makes that difficult.

Could you assist in selecting the most compatible DDR3 at the shop where I can claim best warrenty/service, namely www.alternate.be?
Link to available DDR3 2x2Gb portfolio:
http://www.alternate.be/html/product/listing.html?navId=706&sort=PRICE&filter_2=4+GB&filter_4=DIMM&filter_3=2+st.
Alternatively if your recommendation would be none in that list then would I be better off with a 2x4Gb DDR3 upgrade?
Link to available DDR3 2x4Gb portfolio:
http://www.alternate.be/html/product/listing.html?navId=706&sort=PRICE&filter_2=8+GB&filter_4=DIMM&filter_3=2+st.&filter_5=50.0-99999.0

In the latter case should I just keep my old Geil memory in the other dual channel bank to have 12Gb total or would I be best to remove it completely for compatibility?

Current system specifications:
- Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D LE (Dual channel memory architecture)
- CPU: Intel i5 750
- DDR3: 2x2Gb @ 1333MHz
- GFX: ASUS HD5850
- OS: Windows 7 64bit
- Case: Antec Three Hundred

Thanks in advance for your assistance. (I will pick best answer)

try to get the same specs then , and look at the Volt also .. (1.5 or 1.65 ) and try your luck , and buy from some one who offers 14 days return policy or so .. this is your best way

First look at this list to know which wont work

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P7P55D_LE/#support_QVL

some times memory work in 2 slots but not in 4 slots ... as you see in the list.

busy now to look at it for you but it is easy

Looked at the list and my existing memory from Geil is in it however it seems to be an old list as it has no or few 8Gb (2x4Gb) solutions.
Furthermore for 4Gb (2x2Gb) @ 1333Mhz there is no matching partnumber to be found in the list at Alternate. The one that is closest is the Corsair TW3X4G1333C9DHX only the last letters are different as the Alternate one ends on 9DA instead of 9DHX but I assume this is package related.

Bottomline is it would still be a different brand, different CL and different voltage compared to the existing Geil memory in my case so will this work or am I better off going for a new set of 2x4Gb but then again which one as there is none specified in the QVL list?

your old chip , does it work in all 4 slots ? or just 2 ?

check it out .. if only 2 , then you need to replace them all together .

and try to goto Crucial site and Kingston Site , they have a memory compatibility checkers

It works in all 4 slots. Check both memory compatibility checkers and they deliver very limited results. Also checked G.Skill just by filling in my system specifications and the results are broader but I am unsure that it takes into account compatibility wit the existing Geil set.

Yes, just try to find the same freq memory or atleast supported freq. Usually, no body recommends mixing speed as there are lot of issues doing so. That's the reason many recommend matching the speed, CAS latency and voltage or else you might have to play around in the BIOS to make 'em work together. So try getting 1.5V, Non-ECC, DDR3 DIMM memory anything below 1866MHz should do the job.

If you mix higher speed with lower speed then the memory should work theoretically and from my experience but I cannot guarantee it for sure, cos it plays different with different setups so. Also the higher speed will be downclocked to the lowest speed that is installed.

Yes, you can use the 2 x 2GB modules along with the new memory possibly 2 x 4GB. Hope that helps!!

Thanks for the additional information. Any reason why there are no 8Gb (2X4Gb) sets in the QVL of the ASUS P7P55D LE?

Well, there is something that you should know about the QVL list. All manufacturer's do not test all the memory that is available in the market with one particular mobo. They do not have that kinda of time to do so, IMO. So they test it with whatever that is available with them at that time. So the QVL is just a list of what kind of memory is compatible but that is not the final list of memory, so just refer them. It is not mandatory that you need same part number memory. Hope that goes through. Good Luck!!:)

Ok pretty logical actually and I assume the reason for the lack of 8Gb sets in the QVL is because three years ago 4Gb was plenty.
