I have core i7 975
i use h60 as cooler i want to over clock it to 4.0ghz so can i do it without temperatures exceeding 72 c at full load when running stress test with this cooler

Solution
OMG yes you need thermal paste, its really a magic item, you also want to make sure that you have the thinnish amount on it as possible as well.
Also your CPU puts out much more heat then your cooler is designed for . so i don't see the temps magically dropping. but you wont be ruing prime all time so just keep an eye on it , temps will rise for you over the coarse of a day
those temps are ok under stress testing.

you could try re-seating and re-applying your thermal paste using the rice grain in the middle method, just place the heatsink squarely down onto the cpu without spreading the paste and let the pressure of the heatsink spread the paste.

well currently I OCed it to 3.83ghz
Vcore:1.25
and I ran intelburntest for about 20 times and prime 95 about 40 mins and it seems so far so stable And the cpu temps at full load were 82C max and 42-47C when idle

? really?

Its not specified if his cpu die is at over 72 degrees that's hot there rated for 72.7*C the Cpu cores are rated to 105 max,

Depending on the cooling in this cases a h60 if is cpu die is that hot its about to go splat if its just the core then hes got room to spare.

edit its 67.9°C max die temp my mistake.

something to keep in mind - the H60 is a slightly better but glorified stock level cooler

Stock coolers 75-80w TDW
H60 90w
Hyper 212+ 140w
H110 145-150w

In other words, don't get your hopes up too far for OCing on that cooler. Once you hit 3.9-4.0 you might be stable at near stock volts. Beyond that you are going to have to crank up voltage, therefore heat. Honestly, even 4.0 might be pushing that cooler's capacity

Sorry that was direct at the probe who deleted his comment.

do you get 1 temperature reading or are you getting 4? from you cpu?

well it out of the 4 readings only 83 was the max temp

AND HEY I HAVE REMOVED THE H60 COOLER FEW TIMES FROM THE CPU DO I HAVE TO APPLY THERMAL COMPOUND EVERY TIME YOU REMOVE IT ??

it would be better to freshly re apply the paste now, whenever i remove my heatsink i always freshly re apply my paste and i never get bad temperatures.

just make sure to not spread the paste and use the rice grain in the middle method and place the heatsink down squarely onto the cpu and give it a few slight twists.
