I was hoping to have fun overclocking my wife's computer (community computer) with a budget around $600-800 to overclock the A10 6800k to 5ghz, and use the integrated Radeon 8670D overclocked to 1k+ with 2400mhz ram. I'll play a couple games on it (wow, record games & upload videos to YouTube. bioshock maybe crysis on low settings) and photoshop, can this build perform well with those kinds of games and photoshop? Not going to run a game and photoshop at the same time. And I play on a 55" HDTV.

Basically my wife's computer is for lite gaming but I'll have my own gaming rig soon. Any suggestion on a beast gaming machine overclocked for under $1700 would be great.

Solution

The A10 6800k overclock was a build checker question. Will this build do the tasks I listed or is there a better solution for that same price range.

Then the 2nd half was looking for suggestions on a gaming build, and you gave 2 good solutions for video: 2 GTX 760s.
I'm not sure what you are asking here. do you want help with the wife's computer or your own? (If your own build, then stating your plans for your wife's computer is a bit unnecessary)

With a 1700.00 budget, you won't have a hard time. For GPU consider getting 2 GTX 760s, in SLI they out perform a Titan. You could probably even fit an extreme i7 3930k I think it is. (the one for 500.00)

gotcha. ok well the only problem I see with getting to 5 ghz is that the motherboard only has a 4+2 power phase. I'd imagine that unless you win the silicon lottery big, then you'll need something that can handle higher voltages. So to get anything better, you'd need to go with an atx board instead of mini-itx

this will require a larger case.

you'd want at least 6+2 power phase VRM (but even that might not hit 5 ghz)

this asus would be one that has 6+2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131882

An 8+2 power phase would be better but I don't think that there are any FM2 Mobos with 8+2

Also, 800w is WAY overkill for your build, unless you plan on adding a gtx 770 or something ;)

i got my build off of
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/A10-6800K/5.html

it was the board and power supply he used to attain 5 ghz, also after playing on pcpartpicker with multiple builds I was making sure I could toss on a 660 Ti since it's only $200 more.

Not every cpu can overclock as far as one u saw online, but most can prob get close to the 5ghz, and even though he used a 800watt psu its not needed, its a website that test quite a bit of hardware and use the psu for other things.

Unless ur building an itx build then prob just get the standard atx/matx board even though its what they used. I like most of the higher priced asus 85x boards or the asrock extreme 6 board. I trust asus more with their quality over asrock so would get one of their boards. The Gigabyte UP4 board has a 8+2 power design, which im pretty sure the itx asrock board they used was not 8+2.

For a psu if u want modularity full or partly or not at all i like corsair hx series, also xfx psus are good, but silverstone and seasonic make great low wattage psus that are great quality that are modular and have bronze to platinum 80+ certification

ty, i'll change the power supply.

Let's say I clocked it to 4.8ghz to 5.0ghz, is it worth it, or just buy the 3770k intel build?

I'm new to the AMD v. Intel debate so it's a little overwhelming, and then toss in the fact I'm trying out overclocking...compounding the headache. hah.

On paper the A10 6800k can clock to 4.8ghz to 5ghz, and the 3770k intel is averaged around 4.5ghz to 4.7ghz...so given the same guts & video card, which will perform better on games & adobe products? Does it matter that I also play on a 55" HDTV?

The size of the screen doesn't matter, only the resolution being run. 1080p is 1080p whether it is on a 20" or 55" screen.

Intel has higher performance but AMD is generally better bang for the buck. AMD integrated graphics out performs intel's however.

If you are planning on going with a 660 TI (i'd say get the 760 instead) then consider going with a FX-6300. The only reason to go with an A-10 is if you are going to use the integrated graphics.

An i5 at 4.5 will out perform any AMD, even at 5 ghz, but you'll be paying a premium for that performance. AMD's cpus are good enough and are definitely not bad. They just use a bit more power.

Ok cool, so I'll start an intel overclock build, if you wouldn't mind reviewing it for me. =)

Intel 3570k Overclock build for $1234
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1njem

how much more performance will I get out of this machine over the last, considering it's $300 difference.

U can get 8gb gkskill ripjaw x 2400mhz for like $70 on newegg, way better than 1333, and maybe u want to throw in a 120gb or 256gb ssd in there, or evetually get one once u have it u wont want to go back to a reg hdd lol

Also not to sure that 240mm seidon will fit in that case

Been fine tuning based off your feedback...

1 last check?

Looking to overclock to 4.4ghz or so. Do i have enough power/cooling? And can I go with a cheaper mobo or is this worth the price?
