Is an 8 pin connector compatible with a 4 pin socket?

I have just finished building my first custom built pc however there is a 4 pin atx12v slot next to the CPU on the motherboard but I only have a 8 pin connector on my PSU, is it safe to plug the 8 pin connector and have 4 pins in the atx12v slot and 4 pins hanging over or I have I messed up?

1 x Main connector (20+4Pin)
1 x 4+4 Pin ATX 12V < Yes split it , that's why it's made like that
1 x EPS 12V
2 x PCI-E
6 x SATA
4 x Peripheral
1 x Floppy

It doesn't come as two separate 4 pins though it is just one 8 pin connector

It should still go in , just line it up with the clip.
