Laggy System Problem

My sister's pc has been running slowly for the past few years, but it never really affected her that much. However, recently it has become extra slow (it can take up to 10 minutes before she can do anything), this morning it would startup, go to the desktop, but her icons and start bar didn't show up until five minutes later! I'm pretty good with pc's myself, but all I can come up with is that her registry is bugged up. Another baffling thing, is that she has a decent dual-core processor, and 4GB of RAM. Neither of us want to wipe her hard drive, but I can't think of what this could be. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Solution
ok,first what is she doing for housekeeping,ie disk cleanup, defrag, etc? if this question doesnt ring a bell, download, update, and run ccleaner.when it has completed the disk check, delete everything it comes up with.next do a registry scan.it will ask you if you want to back up the scan, say yes and back it up to my documents. after backup click fix all problems.next do a defrag analysis to see what state of fragmentation your hard drive is in. click accessories, system tools, defragger.if things dont clear up you may have malware or a virus.do this first, then post back with the results and we can take it from there.
