Hello all. As the title suggests, I need help deciding if I should go with the nVidia i5 3570k ($220) or the AMD FX-6300 ($110). Ideally, I would go with the i5, as that is what most people would suggest. However, what would the i5 excel in that the FX won't? I'm going to be rendering/editing/gaming. Price vs. Performance matters to me. Thanks in advance. :)

Well, the 3570k will beat the 6300 in virtually everything. An 8350 would win in some multithreaded tasks, but the 3570k is more overclockable, by a long shot, and much better for most games in any event. If you have the budget for a 3570k, I'd go for it.
Well, if your needs are in that order, rendering/editing/gaming I'd suggest the 8350 for about 190. It has performance in highly threaded applications that rival the 3770k, for quite a bit less. It's not as strong of a gamer, so it really does depend on what your needs are. It's not a slouch in gaming though, so keep that in mind.

Thank you very much. :D

Look at some benchmarks and see how the processors compare. For example in Adobe Photoshop or in Blender the Intel Core i5-3570K and the AMD FX-8300 did pretty much the same. The Intel won by 2%, not a noticeable difference in real life IMO.

When buying a PC for work, don't skimp on the CPU. It's the most important part. For example with the FX-6300 you save $100 compared to those other two, but it would take 20% more time for the same thing. Who would you rather be, the guy who spends $900 on the PC and works Monday to Friday, or the guy who spends $800, has a cheaper CPU, and works Monday to Saturday (that is, 20% more time) to achieve the same thing?

If you go by those graphs, he's way better off buying a 8350 and saving money over the 3570k. Roughly a 30 dollar difference between the two? Of course, the 6300 performs worse, but it's half the price of the 3570k.

Here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fx-8350-vishera-review,3328-8.html In most workplace benchmarks the 8350 trumps the 3570k. There is an adobe benchmark and itunes benchmark where it doesn't, but otherwise the choice between those two is pretty clear.
