Hello everyone!

My very old laptop broke :( ...so it's time for a new computer!

It needs to run Photoshop CS6 with relatively large files and many layers (no video editing, no 3D rendering). no gaming.

It needs to ship to Canada (heh ;)

I have to admit i prefer laptops, but would sacrifice for a desktop if the price was significantly better.

soooo, i looked things up and kinda boiled it down to these two options, based on CPU and GPU reviews/info i scavenged.

option 1:
Asus R500N, AMD A8-4500 quad-core, 750G hard drive, 8G RAM, integrated AMD Radeon HD7640G with no dedicated VRAM, 470$.

option 2:
Asus, i7-3610QM quad-core, 750G hard drive, 8G RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT650M, much pricier at 790$.

option 3:
build a desktop? It looks more expensive, though, and i don't know where to start :/ i have only a laptop now, so would need everything...

last piece of info: i did look at newegg.ca, dell.ca and the common electronics store online for pricing, but surprisingly i didn't find any other options that looked better. I eliminated all desktop that didn't have dedicated VRAM because it looked silly to me to have a desktop with no separate videocard.

any advice?

thanks!!!

Yeah you are right on the video card side. Photoshop has started using gpu power more and more. The Asus i7 is an excellent laptop for what you want to do however the A8 will be slower and not a pleasant experience. As far as desktops go it all depends on your budget.

Edit: I would also recommend trying to get a nice IPS monitor like a 24" Dell UltraSharp 16:10 is also much more enjoyable IMO when working I.E. CAD, Photoshop, InDesign, Excel, etc... Besides going from a laptop to a IPS monitor your eyes are going to love you for it. It will be weird at first but eventually you won't want to go back.

Edit again: I just remembered look at lenovo y500 and y510p they usually are on sale and are good alternatives to the asus.

Hi!
For the budget, i'd really only consider a desktop if it was cheaper than a laptop for similar performances. And i was surprised to find out that similar-priced desktop were not really out-performing the laptops i listed. For example, is this desktop from BestBuy.ca much better?
- CyberPowerPC Gamer Ultra Gaming PC , AMD FX-4100, quad-core, 1Tb hard drive, 8G RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 1G VRAM, 570$.

I'll check the Lenovo. And i agree that working on a real screen would be better. i wanted to buy one even with a laptop.

Any other ideas?
