Building a PC, do I need a GTX 770 or GTX 670?

Building it for my brother. He's funding this endeavor. The 770 is 100$ more, but is it worth the price? He wants to be able to do anything he pleases for a few years. (BF4 ultra, things like that)

Here's the build so far:

If I have made a mistake part wise, please let me know. Haven't built a PC in a while. Also, he wants that corsair case, but i'm not sure it will fit all the components. Is it good in that regard? (Has efficient cooling as well?)

The 670 and 770 are not comparable. If he wants it to last for a few years it would be better to go with the GTX770. Nice mobo by the way :D. Build looks good otherwise, maybe an aftermarket CPU cooler for a quieter PC

Why aren't they comparable? Its nearing the 1.5K mark and he's asking me if its worth it to go for the 1.5K pricetag (i7 and stuff) or I can go i5 it and drop 100$ off the mobo etc.

And yeah, I was recommended that mobo. Is it ideal for the build, or can I susbitute it with like a Z87 extreme for cheaper, but not lose out on a lot of quality? (I know next to nothing about motherboards!)

thanks a lot btw so quick :)

Them not being comparable is nonsense, the 770 is a rebadged 680, the 680 was basically a rebadged 670. The performance gap is 20% at most, plus factor the reduced overclocking of the 770 because its already had its core clock bumped up.

However, also consider that the $100 cheaper 670 I'm guessing is a reference card with a crap cooler, 770's pretty much start at their base price with aftermarket coolers, as the reference model was replaced pretty much a week after launch.

yeah and the 670 is a rebadged 660 and the 660 is a rebadged 650 right?

Haha, I tried to tell him that man. He's a poker player so little old me working part time and him being a big shot.. Lets just say he doesn't have the whole "Value of a dollar" thing down.

I found this aftermarket cooler to be pretty cheap. Its all good right? http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rrb10212pg1

And cooky/aatje, you guys both seem to agree that the 770 is worth getting here, so i'll take your advice. I'm just not a computer whizz so I very much appreciate your help.

Is that Case ok for the build as well?

No...

The 770, physically, is 100% identical to the 680. They differ in software, a raised voltage limit (1.2 over 1.175), and a few out of the box clock bumps. Thats it. The 670 and 680 were about 5-10% apart in performance, because the 670 was just a 680 with an SMX cut.

This is common knowledge, its not some miraculous industry secret.

Despite the small gap in performance increase, your point is that the cooler on the 770 makes it worth spending the extra 100$, correct?

I meant size wise, since I personally went with the HAF cooler master, and the corsair is marginally smaller. Thats not a problem from what I can tell; since you didn't mention it.

What were the models of 670 and 770? If its reference vs reference its not worth it.

Luckily raising voltage is as easy as pie with Nvidia and there's no need to go with the 680 right?

stop spreading bs.

Yeah, I did the math based off a comparison on another site, and it ended up being a 33% price increase for 20%~ better performance.

Finished my build for him I believe :) Only need monitors, but i can do that myself!

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1nkrb How'd I do?

Regarding the i7, I tried to explain to him that its only really for video editing, things of that nature. He'd just say "its 70$ more."

And I'd only need 8Gb of ram?

With that mobo you could consider buying a GTX 760 now and another one later for SLI. Buying two of them now would cots $100 more than a single GTX 770, but with loads more performance. If you can buy the second one a year from now used, the difference is going to be less.

GTX 670 is great value for money though, if the GTX 770 is too expensive and you don't want to go the SLI route. You can't go wrong with any of the three cards, honestly.

Edit: Looking at the rest of your build, I'd ditch the 16GB RAM in favor of 8GB if the system is primarily for gaming and not professional Photoshopping. The money saved you could use to get the GTX 770 over the GTX 670. Also check if Samsung 840 EVO is available where you live at the time of your purchase, it's a nice upgrade over the regular 840 and should cost almost the same.

Yea, 16GB is way more than whats needed. For most games you can easily get away with 4GB, but obviously go with 8GB.

As to the i7, if hes prepared to pay the difference and knows what hes getting then really its fine. It will influence how fast the system is outside of gaming to an extent, and there are actually some recent games that can make use of an i7, rare as they are.

+1 to this recommendation.

Unless you want to save a bit now by buying a 760 and going for SLI later when BF4 or some other more demanding game releases. That would give you awesome GPU performance at only slightly more cost than a GTX 770. (I expect the 760 price to drop at least a bit when the new Radeons launch.)

If, however, your choices are to either go with 16GB RAM and GTX 670 or to go with 8GB RAM and GTX 770, then definitely do the latter.
