If a sole proprietor/single person, not from an IT background, wanted to be really on top of his "IT department", what would he need to do/software set up required so he could have something like a 'command centre' on his desktop? Is such possible? Is it worth doing?

Probably not worth doing, but what do you want this "command center" to do?

Thanks. Not coming from an IT background, it is a bit hard to describe. Just some of the things I would imagine would be that you could see at a glance:

i) list of all software, type, size, date expected to be updated

ii) to the non-IT person, meaningful measures of performance of the overall system

iii) related to ii), state of the security system(s) in place--or not

The only reference I can think of for example, is what an experienced IT person would have to do to effectively monitor & manage a small business of say 5, 10-20 computers & associated equipment.
