Hi all,

Please excuse my ignorance here, but I've only ever used laptops!
I've just purchased this PC (not arrived yet) and am currently deciding what monitor to purchase.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Ideacentre-Desktop-Processor-Graphics/dp/B00DIVAOH2/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1375436563&sr=1-2&keywords=lenovo+i7+16gb

I'm a little confused regarding how monitors and PCs connect (ie the difference between HDMI, VGA etc etc) and how this is related to the graphics card.
The monitor I'm thinking of getting comes with a VGA cable. Would this work with this computer? Or do I need to buy an additional cable?

Many thanks for any help/advice you can offer!

it should be fine, the monitor you're getting takes a HDMI output so you can easily connect to it since your graphics card allows you to use a HDMI connection.

All you need is a HDMI cable!

i'm not too sure if you can use your VGA cable since i dont know what graphics card you have but most graphics cards nowadays take a VGA connection also, so you should be fine.

There's a VGA input on your graphics card that sticks out the back of your computer, it'l be inbetween the USB ports and the sound/microphone input, I think, if I remember right the GT640 has 2 DVI-D ports (This really is for when you want more than 1 monitor) and you'd use these -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Computer-Gear-DVI-D-Dual-Cable/dp/B004WKTSQ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1375437673&sr=8-2&keywords=dvi-d

Also the GT640 has a VGA input, so just use the VGA cable you get with the monitor and put it in the VGA slot, at the back of your PC there will be 2 VGA ports, one on your motherboard that will be pointing north/south, and the one you want to use will be pointing west/easy. Just put it in the VGA port and put it in the back of your monitor, really easy!

Hi both,

Thanks for the answers.
Winkay - I don't actually need to purchase an additional cable(s) then?

Are there any drawbacks with using VGA as opposed to DVI or HDMI?

Thanks again

No, there's no real drawbacks and no you don't need any additional cables, however, if you ever wanted more than 1 monitor, you'd have to get some DVI-D cables (Which I linked)
