So I have a $500 build idea I'm pretty happy with for a general use non-intense-gaming home pc, but today I saw what appears to be a good deal on a pre-built machine and I was hoping I could get some advice on if one significantly outperforms the other!

The build:

AMD A10-6800k
ASRock FM2A75M-ITX Rev. 2.0
PNY DDR3-1866mhz 8gb (2x4gb)
WD caviar black 500GB 7200RPM 3.5"
Corsair 430M semi-modular power supply
Coolermaster Elite 120 mini ITX case
Asus DVD drive
Windows 7 Home Premium
Total cost: $500

The pre-built:

Intel i5-3330 (3.3 ghz)
DDR3-1600mhz 8gb
1 TB 7200RPM HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium
Cost: $450

This would be my first build, so that's the main reason I'm considering the convienence of a pre-built machine. I'm trying to determine when one would outperform the other to decide if I want to put in the work and the little extra cash to build my own. The best thing about the build is the mini ITX case, it'll fit great in my desk space.

if you want to game at least a bit, the a10 will smash the i5! The i5 has more cpu power, but the integrated graphics hd2500 isnt even nearly capable of low end gaming, so the a10 would be the better option.

Thanks for the input. I have gone back and forth about the APU vs CPU + GPU thing.

I posted an FX6300 build which is more or less what you're suggesting (is the FX6300 better than the Athlon you chose?):http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1751101/setup-ready-build-amd-6300.html

I like that build but I just don't know if I will need the extra video power. Is there a way I would know whether I should make the jump to discrete graphics? I don't have any recent games.

yes, the fx6300 is better, but it needs a am3+ board and there are no mITX available so i choose the athlon which goes on a fm2 board like the apus. The athlon is a a10 apu with disabled graphics.
the performance gap is defenitly feelable, so i would spend the additional 30 bucks and get a way better system for gaming.

Yeah, the FX6300 build comes in closer to $600.

If I'm weren't doing 'gaming', would I be better off with the APU?

One other thing...would I not need a larger power supply to run the discrete graphics build?

nope, since the athlon cpu is exactly the same as the apu except the disabled integrated graphics. a fx6300 would be even stronger.
no, you wont need a stronger psu: cpu max 100w + gpu max 80w + ~50w for the rest= 230w at full load, so its perfercly fine

I would prefer a HDD drive with a longer warranty since my OEM windows will be tied to it, so if I swap out the seagate for the WD Black I'm looking at $550 for the Athlon build. I will write this one down and keep it in mind, thank you :)

Since I just got into looking for a computer, perhaps I have been 'blinded' by the new shiny A series and FX processors.

I don't know if you have experience with mITX cases, but is it possible I need extra fans if I go discrete graphics vs non?

Question, if I were to get an A8/A10 and disable the graphics on the chip to use a video card instead, would that be better than using the AMD Athlon II X4 750k? Based on the benchmark tests the A8-6600k performs better?

The A8-6600k will only run me $10 more than the Athlon. If it's no big deal I'll probably just get the Athlon.

Thanks, that is what led to the question :)

One other thing, I read that the ASRock FM2A75M-ITX board has a bad reputation, does anyone know if the problems were fixed in the R2.0? There are only two mITX boards for the FM2 socket so its either that or an MSI.

sorry, but dont trust sites like cpuboss. they dont even test the hardware, they just compare by the specs. better read serious reviews. and no the a8 isnt better, it sometimes just takes advantage of its graphics over the athlon, otherwise they are identical.

and no sorry, dont know abot the boards
