I'll be running a 3770k with a mild overclock with a gtx 770 also reasonably overclocked. I like Battlefield 3, I'll surely be playing BF4, maybe some RTSs and Diablo 3. If I am getting frames anywhere between 80 to over 120, should I definitely be looking at 120hz monitors? I was considering the Asus VG248QE or is that overkill? I would be playing at 1080p with the highest frame rate preferable to the more pretty lighting and shading settings.

Solution
that would depend if you want to see it at 120 fps then the 120hz is good if you don't mind go for a lower one(60hz most likely) and save some money. looking at the comparison you would get motion blur but that wouldn't be common maybe when you spinning but some games automatically include that so it is really a preference.

In most games(as far as i know) there's an option called Vsync which locks the fps to around your monitors fps is i have a 60hz with vsync on it keeps it around 60 fps a little more or little less sometimes.

It's up to you - 120Hz/fps is really only good for online shooters and maybe racing games. Sure your games will look smoother, but it won't enhance your gameplay experience - except maybe in Battlefield MP.

I personally don't think it's worth the extra money, because if I'm getting above 60fps I turn on Vsync to eliminate screen tearing (something I really hate) but many folks will tell you differently.

So I'm going to school for 3D animation and I'm set on getting a 770, I guess gaming will come secondary to animation/rendering so I suppose I can deal with locking the frame rate. If I do lock the frame rate can I set the rest of the graphics to ultra and run fine?

It's probably best to use Adaptive Vsync in the Control Panel for those games you can get above 60fps on Ultra. That or set a global framerate cap at 60 with MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision (both use the RivaTuner OSD).
