i just got an fx8350 to put in my asrock 990fx extreme 4, as a replacement for a phenom 2 x4 965 that is going into my sons pc. this should have been a simple operation as the bios is already at 2.00 and the chip has been supported since 1.80.

but something went wrong.

when i try to power on the pc with the new chip in it sort of trys then just turns off. i have to turn the power supply off at the back and back on to get it to do it again.

the chip is the only part of the system that is changing and im writing this now on the same system with the phenom in it .

so the question is wth?

i believe that the psu is probably at fault. its a CIT 750w. and it only has a 4 pin cpu power plug instead of the 8 on the socket on the motherboard . the motherboard manual said that was ok but this is an 8350.. also i've never heard of CIT, it was what my local computer shop had in stock over 500w when i went to buy a new psu looking for a 6 pin pcie plug .. yes i understand the trail of fail there . no need to point it out. but when you forget to order a psu capable of powering your new graphics card and you want to shoot someone in the face you buy what is available. and that was years ago.

so yeah now i have that PSU

the info from the side is as follows

CIT 750w

Voltages
+3.3v 28a
+5v 30a
+12v1 22a
+12v2 22a
-12v 0.3a
+5vsb 2.5a

Current
5a

looks bleak doesn't it? could one of you guys please confirm what i think i already know and tell me the PSU is the problem so i can got shopping tomorrow and not have to send the chip back?

I think the 8-pin CPU plug is mandatory for new CPU. That's likely your problem.

But yeah, nevertheless I would replace the PSU anyways. A cheap PSU is more likely to fail or cause system instability, or worst damaging something. The one SR-71 Blackbird suggested is excellent. But if you can't get it in your area, just check for brands with good reputation, here are a few example: Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power & Cooling, XFX, etc...

sorry . i've been looking at many things while i've been sat here. the more i read the more i think the psu is to blame . apparently having the 12v rail split isnt great and its quite low powered anyway.

motherboard asrock 990fx extreme 4
8 gig ddr3
Radion HD 7850 1 gig
64 gig SSD i forget who made it
Keyboard is a Logitch G11
Mouse Logitech G9? i think

thats it for whats currently plugged in

----------------- Everything Below this line is currently disconnected ----------------
*500 gig sata again no idea what brand
* 160 gig sata see above
* and a 120 gig IDE no idea what brand
* Creative Labs Recon3d USB Wireless headset

Are you in a rush? Maybe you could order a better one from a online site, some of them ship pretty fast so you could get it next week. Just don't make the same mistake as last time and buy it too fast.
