Hello,
I am confused about waiting or upgrading my system. I planned for i7 4960x - 6 core @ 3.6 GHz - 4.0 GHz (Invy Bridge-E) and GTX 780 Classi w/ ACX. However i heard about the Haswell-E CPUs next year which will be 8 core CPUs supporting DDR4. Also it will have another chipset... About the GPU - wait for GTX 880s?

My current system is:
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q9300 @ 2.5GHz
GPU: GTS 250

This is what i plan to do with my system - gaming at highest settings, video editing, encryption, file conversion. I think that explains why i am looking for a very high end desktop.

More about : upgrade wait invy bridge haswell

The currently available SBEP goes up to 8 cores. IVBEP will go up to 12 cores. HSE is far to for off if you need a pc now, especially with a c2q. Although a dual cpu rig will give better price to performance than the highest end cpus. You can get a dual 6 core cpus for $425 each.

if you can wait for 1 year , then you dont need it lol ...

Haswell-E is 1 year ahead ...

and you dont need to wait for haswell if you can get upto 12 cores ivy-ep .. I mean , you can go up as you wish till 12 cores ...

how much budget you have in mind ? if it is low like $2000 then is not worth waiting ..

Do you mean, 6 cores/12 threats? I haven't heard about 12 core processor for now... And you were asking about my budget, the i7 4960X might cost around $1000-$1100 when it gets released this September, but what if i get the CPU on Black Friday? Won't it be 50% off?

I also have one more question - I see people buying those DDR3 RAM at 2133 MHz when the IVBEP is for a 1866MHz DDR3...Why?
I know that the Haswell is one year ahead, but the DDR4 RAM is what really gets me thinking about it, it's not that it will be 8 cores/16 threats...it will operate at higher speeds than 2133 Mhz DDR3s. Intel will probably keep the socket 2011, however, release an improved version of those motherboards...

The Xeon Variants of Ive-EP are coming in September , they will work on current X79 mobos , and will be released upto 12 cores 24 threads ..

Apple MAc pro Announced the 12 cores ONE CPU

and it is also coming in spet.

see it here

http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/

they are coming in 4/6/8/10/12 cores

Well, I am not looking for Intel Xeon. The Intel Core i7 4960X (Invy Bridge-E) is as well an "Extreme edition" processor.

As you can see, it is 6 cores/12 threats. However do you mean that they will release 8 core and 12 core variants of this one as well?

Thats the i7 , its 8/10/12 Variants will be Xeons. IvyBridge -EP

Why don't you want to go with xeon? The only reason I can think of is ocing. But the 4960x is a waste of money if you could get the 4930k for $555 and oc it to the same speed. But even then, 2x6 core will still beat it.

They won't release 8 and 12 core of IBE, this is only for IBEP.

Btw it's Ivy not Invy.

Well, really, not asking for a Xeon one... first it's too expensive and 2nd, they consider it as a "server" CPU. The i7 4960x I can overclock freely and i am sure it will be stable one just like the SBEP i7 3960x and 3970x. I saw that 12 core, but it isn't one CPU as you said - it's 2 CPUs that are 6-core each of them! Just saying the only 8-core CPU i saw was a AMD one and it was Core 8/8 Threats (1 threat per core). Maybe there will be 8 core CPUs when the new Xeons come, but again, I am not going for a Xeon processor.

And yeah it is true - the i7 4960x is a waste, but when I look at it - more L3 Cache, same power consumption.... I was thinking about the i7 4930K before but somehow, I always look for the better one... And why not Xeon you said? I think Xeon is somehow "limited". Idk if I can overclock it and really, i ain't really doing a server or something...

BIG no it is not 2 cpu , read again it never says 2 cpu in the new mac pro coming in SEPT ...

go and read it again ...

First it's not more expensive. Common misconception, go take a look at existing xeons. And again it's actually cheaper to do a dual cpu rig which will outperform an oc i7.

Ok so do you mean, taking a server motherboard and putting 2 CPUs on it? O_O Maybe I just get the i7 4930k and enjoy... won't cost a lot...

Go for the Xeon, they are a beast. 12 core/24 thread and can put in dual physical cpu mb if you wanted. No need to over clock them.
