I bought a GTX 470 off Ebay because I just wanted a decent GPU to use until the Black Friday-Cyber Monday sales and it seems to be dead. This is my first pc build and I want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong and the card is actually dead. When I first turned on my pc there were artifacts on the screen and my card wasn't listed anywhere in the BIOS. I couldn't get rid of the artifacts until after I had installed Windows 7 and downloaded drivers from NVIDIA. Once the drivers were installed my pc still wasn't detecting the card and my screen resolution was stuck at 800x600. I've tried both PCI-E x16 slots on my ASUS M5A99FX motherboard and my PSU is a OCZ ZX 1000w. When I tried the second PCI-E I think the card was detected but everything still looked like crap. Please help.

It has all the symptoms of a defective card, yes. Can you test it in a different PC? Or test your new MB with a different card?

yeah, it has issues... maybe fixable by remounting heatsink

I only have one other desktop in the house and it has integrated graphics along with a tiny PSU. How could remounting the heatsink potentially fix it and is it hard to do?

What kind of temps does the card present when running?

I don't know how to check but when it was running I couldn't feel much heat coming off it.

Well if the heat sink isnt properly mounted the gpu can over heat within seconds and you wont necessarily know it because the whole decorative covering of the heatsink would be covering the area that would be over heating

It's an MSI GTX 470 Twin Frozr II and just feeling the air around the card, I don't think it could be hotter than a 120f. My CPU was running at 113f and the air around it felt the same or maybe hotter than the air around the GPU.

I can return it for a full refund. Are horizontal white lines running across the screen considered artifacts? Would an HD 7770 be very comparable to the 470? I'm thinking about getting the MSI HD 7770 from Newegg for $90 plus a $20 rebate.

A working GTX470 provides significantly more performance then a 7770.
But any working card is better then a broken card

And yes lines are artifacts.

What do you guys think I should do, get a new HD 7770 or try another GTX 470 from Ebay?

Bad bios setup can also lead to this. Check out each and every feature of your bios and reconfigure it manually. It looks like your bios thinks that pci 16x slot is disabled or is second in priority after onboard graphics etc. First make sure that the bios is perfectly configured then tell if any changes observed.

I'll plug the card back in later tonight and go through the BIOS.
I couldn't find much in the Bios related to the GPU or the PCI slots. What I did find I messed around with a little and at first it seemed like the GPU was working because there wasn't any artifacts but they came back at the password screen and my pc restarted.

7770 is enough for 1280x720 or 1366x720 no problem for most games

If you run crossfire on them you can max out every game you play

Unless anybody has any other suggestions I'm going to order the MSI 7770 from Newegg and return the GTX 470.

Good idea. The GTX 470 would be overkill for 720p anyway. You should be able to play almost any game at max settings with the HD 7770.

Since its a fresh build, have you installed chipset drivers first? Go to device manager and check if you've a yellow question mark appearing before any device. Just do this much and let me know the status.

The chipset drivers were the first thing that I installed after the Windows software. I bought the MSI 7770 and I've been using it with no problems since Thursday. I just finished playing through Tomb Raider on Ultra settings :)  .

Congrats. Enjoying a game is much better than troubleshooting, huh? ;)
