Before installing windows 7, there will be a chance to mess with the hard drive selection / partitioning. from here you can see how many drives you have, how big they are, and how much space is free. Look for Advenced, Custom and Repair My Computer, these sections will have this information. another option woild be to boot the computer from a live linux disk (like xubuntu) and check from there. Another option would be to put the hard drive in a computer that has a running operating system to check. a great windows app for explaining what files are where and where all your hard drive space is being gobbled is "WinDirStat": http://windirstat.info/download.html

Windows 7 will require a minimum of 20 free gigabytes [GB] partitioned space.
