I have an Asus M5A97 R 2.0 and i finally decided it would be a good idea to update my bios. I just installed version 1903 without any issues, or at least until my computer rebooted. Upon rebooting, it could no longer detect my hdd and one of the fans would only run at full speed. I really want my computer to boot and I can hear it across my house so this obviously won't work. Everything is running cool so I have no idea why it would be doing this. If someone could save my computer, that'd be greatly appreciated.

You may need to enter the bios and re-enable Qfan to adjust the fan speed.

Are you sure the drive is not detected or is it just not set as your boot drive any more.

Most bios updates reset ALL settings to default and this includes turning OFF raid or setting SATA ports to IDE mode(should be AHCI for most users that are not running raid). It can also re-enable any onboard devices you may have switched off and change what drive the system wants to boot from.

So I checked and the chassis fan control was disabled so I fixed that. It wouldn't detect my hdd until I switched the sata ports (which shouldn't have made a difference) but now it just won't boot off of it.

Under the BOOT section you will have to set it to first boot device.

Did your sata port mode get changed as well?

The issue that I was having was that it wouldn't let me select the HDD I wanted as the primary boot drive (or maybe I was just being overly stupid) so I unplugged the hdd I didn't want to boot off of which cause my bios to default to the only one that was there then plugged the extra hdd back in (long story short, it's working). Thanks for all of the help!

Sometimes to move the boot drive selection around you need to use "page up" and "page down" or + and - sometimes even with the shift key for one. It is all about getting to know your board :)

I had a similar irritating problem - my fan speed was fine(normal), then one day it started running 100% - noisy and unnecessary. After a year of this, my UPS went bonkers - I switched off the UPS to reset it while my PC was still on. Guess what - my fan is now working normally - nice and quiet.
I don't know if a PC hard shutdown like this is recommended, but it accidentally solved my problem.
