Hi, I have an old Dual core pc. The specs are following:
Intel Dual core 2.5 E5200
2GB DDR2 800 Bus
Intel DG31pr
450 watt PSU
XFX Nvidia GT 220 1GB DDR2
160GB Samsung HDD

My question is, can I upgrade the ram to 4GB with the current CPU? Will that make any change to the performance of that pc or it is worthless?

Thnks in advance.

Google SSD optimization for more specific info. Essentially there are processes which affect SSD performance. I think Samsung has an optimization tool on the installation CD (or their website). This is also a great tool to speed things up and check the right services are disabled.

I'd definitely go for the 4Gb of ram, your machine should be an easy upgrade. Go with 2 x 2Gb sticks of memory if you can, as the E5200 has dual channel memory access. This means it can speed things up by reading data to both memory DIMMS at the same time. If you currently have 2 x 1Gb sticks I'd replace both of them if you have the money (I think the DG31PR only has 2 memory slots).

Adding memory is a great idea. I still use a slower PC like this at work and it helped adding memory. Remember you can only access more than 4Gb of ram if you have a 64bit Operating System, otherwise a 32bit O/S may only see 3.5Gb. It would still help. You may also want to make sure you optimized your SSD. If you are trying to play games on this machine then the GT 220 is the worst item on the list.

Ya, the DG31 has 2 DDR2 Slots. I have one 2gb stick installed now. I was just confused if the CPU can use the power of both rams cause someone told me it has only 1mb cache and it cant handle 4GB Ram. Overl Thanks, all of you for your suggestion. I will go for the upgrade.

Yes, you can upgrade to 4GB as mentioned in the above links. If you need memory then try the below link or search for similar type of memory in newegg, amazon or any site you prefer. (PC2-5300/6400 DDR2 Non-ECC DIMMs) - http://www.memorystock.com/memory/IntelDG31PR.html
